...into the Library through the secret door (which made the visitors jump even more) to find them looking at our guinea pigs!  How could they think our lovely pets were rats?  However, we did get rats in the house but that’s for another blog!  The guinea pigs were safely put back into their hutch -  not long after this we discovered that one of them had had babies when we weren’t looking!  Not sure what happened in the Library but they were both supposed to be girls when we bought them! After a couple of months at college I met a boy called Kev.  He was in a band and his chat up line was that they needed a singer and he was pretty sure he could get me a...

...ns in the Library.  This was where they spent Christmas Day as, not only was it a nice room, but it had a large fireplace which meant a roaring log fire to keep them warm.  Viv forgot about the attic tenants as she helped trim the tree and listened to her mother telling her about the new tenants that were moving into the West Wing apartment.  “I hope they don’t hear all those weird noises that we hear,” said Viv.  “They might leave!” Her mother laughed and told her that ghosts usually disappeared once a house was being lived in again. Hoar Cross Hall - a bit of history #13

...nd in the Library. Although I’m not sure where they were taken exactly, it looks as though they travelled around the British Empire quite a lot. The Meynells on one of their trips abroad   To keep the Meynell name going Emily’s brother changed his name from Wood to Meynell upon her death in 1904, thus keeping the name in the family. This was quite a common thing to do at this level of society if you wanted to keep a family name. In 1878 Frederick married Lady Mary Lindsay, the third daughter of the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres. Just as an aside, Mary’s sister, Annie, married Frank Bowes-Lyon (second son of the Earl of Strathmore) who went on to h...

...ce in the Library for many decades until the Meynells left in the 1950s. And so herein lies the connection between Alice and the Hall!  Fast forward to the 1990s when Hoar Cross Hall had a new owner, Steve Joynes. He converted the Hall into a Spa Hotel and managed to source a lot of the original furniture from the Victorian era when Emily Meynell (nee Wood) lived there with her husband, Hugo. He found the original mirror which came from Hickleton Hall and now it hangs over the fireplace in the Library, just as it did all those years ago. But it seems that the ghost of Alice may have come with the mirror.  Ever since the mirror was installed in the Library pe...
