Gardeners' World at Hoar Cross

Posted by Viv Wilson on 30th September 1990 in Early Days | Hoar,Hoar Cross Hall,Home Farm,Emily Meynell, first world war, bothy, world war ii
GARDENERS’  WORLD AT  Hoar Cross:         In it’s heyday Hoar Cross Hall had around 28 people employed to keep the 20 acres of grounds tidy and weed free.  In Victorian England the most common of all male servants was the gardener.   At Hoar Cross the head gardener had numerous under-gardeners known affectionately as ‘digging slaves’!  They were responsible for producing fruit, vegetables and growing luxury items in and out of season, much of it under glass.  Adjacent to the house was the carp pool and greenhouse area along with a palm house; next to these was a walled kitchen garden.  This supplied the house with all its fruit, vegetables a...

The Grand Opening #5

Posted by Viv Wilson on 5th July 2020 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | Hoar Cross Hall,Meynell,Japanese mapel tree, midsummer's eve,new year's eve, parachute, red Cross
THE GRAND OPENING:     And so we move into 1971 and the preparation of Hoar Cross Hall so we could open it to the public by Easter. During the run up to buying the house my dad had been buying furniture, carpets and paintings like crazy and I remember our previous home being jam packed with chaise longues, sideboards and carved chests as well as all the suits of armour that he already had. This furniture was now set out in all the rooms. My mum’s collection of Victorian costumes were on display in the Ballroom as well as my dad’s collection of silver plated ‘display’ armour, which hung around the panelled walls; the suits of armour and the many painti...

Midnight Pool Parties #20

Posted by Viv Wilson on 26th October 2020 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | Hoar Cross Hall,Meynell,76 Club,Sex Pistols,Police,Drug squad, ghost,Frank Sinatra
MIDNIGHT POOL PARTIES:      After leaving school I spent a year at Burton-on-Trent Technical College studying to be a secretary but my year at college had come to an end - now to find a job! It didn’t take too long as there was plenty of employment around in those days and I was soon offered a position with a small engineering firm in Burton. As I didn’t drive there was still the problem of me getting to work and dad managed to talk the residents of the apartments into taking me, as they were going to Burton every day as well, and it would save him coming out twice a day (no doubt he was thinking about the petrol he would save too!) Kev and the band were...

Panto Pranks! #30

Posted by Viv Wilson on 5th December 2021 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | Hoar Cross Hall,Meynell, pantomime,Rolls Royce,Amazon,David Matthews,Matt Munro,Lord Killearn,Alexandra Meynell
During the 1970s Hoar Cross Hall was used from time to time for local community activities and one such event was the production in 1978 of a traditional pantomime, ‘Midnight and a Journey back to Happiness’. It was written by local people, Robert Leighton from Yoxall and the Hon. Alexandra Meynell, daughter-in-law of Mrs Jean Meynell whom we had purchased the Hall from. The words and music were written by local songwriter, David Matthews, who had written songs for quite a few pop artists during the 1960s, his most famous being Matt Munro’s ‘We’re gonna change the world’. So off to a good start there! For those of you who don’t reside in the UK an...

Mediaeval Mayhem! #13

Posted by Viv Wilson on 22nd June 2022 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | Hoar Cross Hall,Meynell,mediaeval banquets,long gallery,fire eater,halberdier,lady dorothy,Bridgerton,downton abbey,mead
It was the end of the summer season at Hoar Cross Hall in 1973 and rehearsals had started for the new venture of Mediaeval Banquets. All the cast would come round to the house each week for rehearsals and my mum and one or two other ladies were busy making the skirts and blouses for the wenches. My mum also made about 200 bibs which the guests were going to be wearing as eating five courses with a dagger can be quite messy! We had a King, a Jester, a Fire-eater, a Halberdier, an organist and various wenches and serving ladies. To launch the banquets my parents decided to hold a Press Reception about a month before and so we all gathered at the Hall one day in ea...

Rags to Riches #14

Posted by Viv Wilson on 1st July 2022 in Growing Up In a Stately Home | Hoar Cross Hall,Meynell,Italian,Derby, first world war, second world war,Bridgerton,Downton Abbey, tony blackburn,Michaelangelo
Before we moved to Hoar Cross Hall in Staffordshire we lived in Derbyshire.  My family originated from Derby and my parents were married there in July 1952. Mum was 19 and dad was 36 so quite a bit older. They both lived in Derby and were very arty; my dad went to the Derby Sketching Club in his free time and my mum attended art college. I’m not sure where they met but it was either at something art related or at a dance, as was usual in those days. My dad was a sculptor by trade; I think his interest was sparked by seeing all the beautiful alabaster in Italian churches during the war. After the war he set up his own business making alabaster lamps, bowls and...
